Every year, around the world, the Catholic Church initiates unbaptized adults and older children into the Body of Christ through Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. This year, at St. Clare, we are excited to initiate Alexis Deets and her son, Owen Frazier. Alexis is a budget analyst for the Army at Scott AFB, and Owen is in 4th grade at St. Clare School. Alexis is becoming Catholic because of Owen, who, she says, “was the driving force in gifting me this missing piece (faith) in my life.” Owen had a strong interest in attending church from a young age, which led Alexis on a long search for a place of worship. She discovered that she is most comfortable growing in her relationship with God in the Catholic faith, with which her beliefs align. For his part, Owen knows that it will be good to have God in his life and wants to be one of God’s disciples. Alexis has chosen parishioner Kim Sabella to be her godmother. She and Kim know each other from Rotary Club, and Alexis looks up to her for her admirable qualities, including kindness, professionalism, and being wonderfully supportive. Owen’s godfather is Matt Flynn. Alexis wanted a godfather for Owen who would be patient with all his questions, provide him with knowledge and guidance, and be an example and role model as a good person and disciple of God. For her confirmation saint, Alexis has chosen St. Elizabeth, who is a model for mothers of children with unique personalities. She loves how much St. Elizabeth valued being a mother. Alexis understands that her mission as a mother is to nourish Owen’s many strengths and strong personality just like St. Elizabeth nurtured John the Baptist to be exactly who God created him to be. Alexis says there is a strong resemblance between Owen and his Saint, Philip Neri. Like St. Philip Neri, who was known for sharing his good humor and wit with everyone throughout his life, Owen loves telling jokes and making people laugh and has a “glass half full” mentality. Owen’s journey into the Catholic Church has helped him learn about God and made him want to teach others about Him. He has made more friends being at St. Clare and being around other kids who believe in God and like going to Church. Owen looks forward to being able to help out with volunteer work and at Mass. Alexis has noticed that her journey into the Catholic Church has helped create peace and comfort at home and assisted with new routines. It has allowed her to grow in relationship with God, Owen, and wonderful and supportive new friends. Like Owen, she looks forward to being able to help with volunteer work and wants to thank all of us at St. Clare for being so kind, welcoming, and accepting of her and Owen during this important time in their lives.
